- Protection
- In Europe elder branches were placed over doors and windows on outside of the house to protect the house and its inhabitants from evil. Elderberries could be scattered around the perimeter of the property for the same effect. Dried berries could be carried for a similar effect.[4]
- Fairy Magic
- In the British Isles, elder flowers and berries are associated with fairies. Elderberries have both harmful and beneficial effects on the human body. That makes them able to act as a gatekeeper between worlds. Not in the same way as a hallucinogen, but those sensitive to subtle energies will feel it.[5] This can ease access to the fairy realms, which the Elder seems to be particularly attuned to.
